Iran reports shift in HIV transmission patterns

Health officials in Iran have reported a shift in the patterns of HIV transmission within the country. While a significant portion of those infected still have a history of injecting drug use, recent statistical data indicates that the majority of new infections are now occurring through sexual transmission.

Dr. Hangameh Namdari, head of the AIDS Control Department at the Ministry of Health, stated that the national prevention program already covers all modes of transmission, meaning no immediate change in policy is required. She attributed the decrease in HIV cases among injecting drug users to successful harm reduction programs.

Namdari emphasized the importance of maintaining current harm reduction strategies to prevent a resurgence of transmission via drug use. She also noted that while current medications can reduce viral loads to levels that prevent transmission and allow for a full life, there is currently no global cure that can completely eliminate the virus.
