Iran resumes large rice imports from India and opens US essential goods trade under quality criteria
Iran's Ministry of Agriculture reports that maritime transport obstacles have been cleared, allowing a shipment of around 200,000 tonnes of rice from India to enter Iranian ports this month. The increase follows a period when imports fell to as low as 15‑20 000 tonnes due to logistical disruptions, and officials expect the new volume to help ease domestic rice prices.
The same ministry also announced that imports of essential commodities from the United States may proceed provided they satisfy three conditions: health safety, quality standards, and acceptable pricing. The policy does not signal a strategic shift but aims to ensure food security while using blocked foreign‑exchange reserves and diversifying supply sources amid sanctions.
These measures together seek to stabilise the market for staple foods, reduce reliance on any single supplier, and strengthen Iran's bargaining position in international trade.
