Iran Schedules Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s Funeral for July 4‑9
Iran’s government announced that the state funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will begin on 4 July in Tehran and conclude with his burial on 9 July in Mashhad. The ceremonies were postponed from an originally planned March date after Khamenei was killed in a U.S.–Israeli strike on 28 February, and further delayed to avoid overlapping with the early days of the holy month of Muharram. Tehran’s mayor Ali Reza Zekani said the change allows the public to observe Muharram rites without disruption.
Authorities expect massive attendance, estimating up to 20 million mourners from Iran and abroad, prompting extensive security, traffic and crowd‑management preparations. The funeral is being described as one of the largest public tributes in the country’s recent history.
