Iran Schedules Three‑Day State Funeral for Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Iran announced that a three‑day state funeral will be held for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes on 28 February 2026. Funeral ceremonies are planned for Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, with a burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. Deputy mayor Mohammad Amin Tavakkoli‑Zadeh said the Tehran events will last at least 24 hours and expect 15‑20 million participants.

Following the death, Mojtaba Khamenei, Ali Khamenei’s son, was elected the new supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts. In a written statement, he called on Iranians to show national unity and resilience amid the ongoing war with the United States and Israel, urging the public to reject hostile narratives and maintain cohesion.
