Iran sets dates for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's funeral

Iran announced that funeral rites for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will take place from July 4 to July 9, 2026. Public mourning ceremonies are scheduled at the Imam Khomeini Mosque in Tehran on July 4‑5, followed by a procession in Tehran on July 6 and a second procession in Qom on July 7. The burial will be held on July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad at the Imam Reza shrine. The announcement invites the Iranian public and international sympathizers to attend, noting the expected unprecedented scale of participation.

Khamenei, aged 86, died after a U.S.‑Israel airstrike on February 28, 2026. A new Supreme Leader, Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, was elected by the 88‑member Council of Experts in March.
