Iran sets six demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has issued six specific demands to the United States that must be met before the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened for free-flow naval navigation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that while an agreement with Oman to define new shipping routes is in its “final stages,” the reopening remains contingent on these conditions.

The demands, issued by the outgoing secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, include ending military aggression in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq; lifting the naval blockade and withdrawing U.S. military forces from around Iran; paying damages for past conflicts; lifting illegal sanctions; and unconditionally releasing frozen Iranian assets. Iranian officials have accused the U.S. of besieging Iranian ports and harassing ships, arguing Washington has no moral standing to complain about the waterway's status.

In a separate diplomatic development, Araghchi held a phone call with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to discuss the crisis. Wadephul urged constructive engagement with regional neighbors and the U.S., emphasizing that the Strait should be opened without conditions to ensure safe navigation. Meanwhile, Iran’s parliamentary commission has endorsed a strategic framework aimed at bolstering security and sustainable development in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
