Iran's World Cup debut ends 2-2 draw with New Zealand amid protests and visa hurdles

Iran and New Zealand opened Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2‑2 draw at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on 15 June. New Zealand’s Elijah Just scored twice (7′ and 55′) after assists from Chris Wood, while Iran equalised through Ramin Rezaeian (32′) and Mohammad Mohebi (64′). The result left all four teams in the group – Iran, New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt – on one point each.

The match unfolded against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tension. Hundreds of Iranian‑American protesters gathered outside the stadium, displaying the pre‑1979 Iranian flag (lion and sun) and urging the team’s withdrawal. FIFA rules bar political symbols, but many supporters entered the venue with the flag.

Iran’s squad faced logistical challenges. barred from staying in the United States beyond match days, the team was based in Tijuana, Mexico, and made repeated border crossings for each game. Several officials, including federation president Mehdi Taj, were denied U.S. visas. Coach Amir Ghalenoei criticised the tournament organisation for the “constant travel” and limited preparation time.

Turkish broadcaster TRT suspended the commentator who mis‑spoke during the live feed, launching an administrative review. The incident and the protests highlighted the intersection of sport, security and diplomacy surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament.
