Cyprus faces no Iranian threat if British bases remain neutral, says Tehran
Iranian diplomatic sources have stated that Cyprus is not at risk of Iranian strikes, provided that the British Sovereign Base Areas on the island are not utilized in military operations against Iran. These remarks follow reports from the Financial Times citing Iranian insiders who suggested that Tehran is considering expanding potential conflicts into European territories, specifically mentioning Cyprus and Bulgaria.
In response to these reports, the Cypriot government has dismissed the claims, asserting that the island is not a target for Iran. The Cypriot foreign ministry noted that diplomatic communication with Tehran remains active.
The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence has also addressed the situation, stating that RAF Akrotiri is protected by “robust, multi-layered security measures” and that the security of British personnel and assets remains its highest priority.
