Iran said it summoned French ambassador Pierre Cochard, labeling his actions as "interference" after two French diplomats were detained in Tehran. The French foreign minister, Jean‑Noël Barrot, described the incident as an "extremely serious intimidation", stating the diplomats were held without justification for several hours, with one reportedly molested, and questioned about their work with Iranian civil society. Iran denied wrongdoing, asserting the diplomats were only briefly questioned after attending a meeting with individuals wanted by Iranian authorities. Tehran also summoned Iran's chargé d'affaires in France as a reciprocal measure.

The French foreign ministry urged its government to cease any actions it views as interference in Iran's internal affairs, while Iranian officials maintain the diplomats' questioning was routine.
