Iran suspends Tehran-Mashhad rail service after US strikes
Iran temporarily halted passenger train operations on the Tehran‑Mashhad line after United States strikes damaged a section of the railway. The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways blamed a “criminal attack by the US‑Israeli enemy,” dispatched repair teams and arranged road transport for stranded passengers.
The suspension occurred just hours before the burial of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Mashhad, concluding a multi‑day funeral procession that began in Tehran. U.S. Central Command reported striking about 90 military targets in Iran, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they hit U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in response. The attacks killed 14 people and injured 78, including damage to bridges and other infrastructure.
Despite a cease‑fire agreement and a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran, fighting continued into a second consecutive night of exchanges.
