Iran threatens Greek LNG terminals at Alexandroupoli and Revythousa

Iranian media reported that the Islamic Republic of Iran is considering attacks on energy infrastructure in Greece and Cyprus, naming the LNG terminals at Alexandroupoli and Revythousa and facilities in Cyprus as "legitimate targets" in the context of its escalating rhetoric toward Western interests. The threat follows heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, with recent statements from former President Donald Trump about possible new strikes and Tehran’s own vocal posturing. A drone attack the day before struck a U.S.-owned natural‑gas storage tanker in the Egyptian port of Damietta, underscoring the broader risk environment.

The Revythousa terminal on a small island near Athens serves as the main gateway for liquefied natural gas to Eastern Europe and the Balkans, handling more than 10 billion cubic metres annually and reducing the region’s dependence on Russian gas. The floating terminal at Alexandroupoli, opened in October 2024, is the newest Greek LNG facility. Iranian officials view these sites as strategically important because they support Western energy supplies, and the newspaper Farhikhtegan called them "legal targets" for possible retaliation.
