Iran denies military retaliation over regional aviation restrictions

Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) has officially denied reports that the country plans military retaliation against nations imposing aviation restrictions. The council clarified that while military action is not planned, Iran is pursuing serious diplomatic negotiations to lift what it terms 'illegal' flight suspensions.

The restrictions follow US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement that Iranian airlines would be shut down globally due to secondary sanctions, targeting fuel, landing, and ticketing services. Several regional neighbors, including the UAE, Iraq, Oman, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, have already suspended or restricted Iranian airline operations.

In response, Iranian officials have warned of non-military countermeasures. Mohammad Mokhber, an advisor to the Supreme Leader, stated that if Iran is barred from regional airspace, it will not permit other regional countries to operate flights either. Despite the sanctions, flights to countries such as China, Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Afghanistan remain operational.
