Iran to join BRICS New Development Bank soon, says central bank governor

Abdolnaser Hemmati, the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran, announced that Iran is expected to join the New Development Bank (NDB) soon. The announcement was made ahead of a BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors meeting in India.

Iran, which joined the BRICS group in 2024, is seeking to establish alternative financial channels to mitigate the impact of extensive U.S. and international sanctions. Hemmati emphasized the importance of the NDB as a result of BRICS cooperation and stated that Iran is pursuing bilateral and trilateral monetary cooperation to facilitate trade using national currencies rather than the U.S. dollar.

To support this shift, Iran has initiated technical, legal, and operational assessments to interconnect its payment systems with those of other BRICS members. While the Iranian central bank has signaled its intent to become a member and shareholder, the NDB's corporate communications division has not yet officially confirmed Iran's membership status.
