Iran to pay part of government employee benefits via electronic wallets

Iran has issued a new directive to transfer a portion of government employees' welfare benefits directly into electronic wallets. Under this resolution, the Administrative and Recruitment Organization, the Plan and Budget Organization, and the Treasury are required to establish the necessary executive arrangements within one month. This includes securing resources, requesting funds, and depositing money into the Central Bank to facilitate the charging of employee digital wallets.

The shift toward electronic payment tools aims to reduce reliance on physical bank cards. Experts note that physical cards require materials like PVC and petroleum products, and their production, wear, and loss lead to resource waste. Transitioning to digital methods such as mobile payments or systems like ‘Iran Wallet’ is expected to increase transaction security by mitigating risks associated with lost cards, magnetic strip copying, and the exposure of PINs.
