Iranian Khamenei Funeral Fuels US‑Iran Diplomatic Spike

The week‑long funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran has become a flashpoint in US‑Iran relations. Millions of mourners have gathered in Tehran’s Grand Mosalla and later in Qom, Mashhad and other cities, chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” and displaying banners that read “Kill Trump”. Poet Mohammad Rasouli, addressing the crowd, called for President Donald Trump’s death, prompting loud applause.

President Trump, speaking to Axios, said the United States could “wipe out everyone” at the funeral with a single strike but would not do so because the leaders were needed for negotiations. He repeated the claim that “one shot” could eliminate the entire Iranian leadership. Iran’s embassy in Armenia condemned the remarks as “disrespectful” and warned that ideas cannot be killed.

The funeral has also drawn diplomatic tension. The United States reportedly pressured more than a dozen countries to limit or cancel their attendance. Despite the rhetoric, talks on a permanent end to the US‑Israel‑Iran war remain paused until the ceremonies conclude on July 9. Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has stayed out of public view for security reasons, while senior officials—including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and Revolutionary Guard commanders—have attended.

The event highlights Tehran’s effort to portray resilience after the February 28 US‑Israeli strike that killed Khamenei, while Washington balances provocative statements with ongoing diplomatic overtures.
