Iran: Women defy hardliners' push for compulsory hijab enforcement
A cultural and political tension regarding compulsory hijab laws has re-emerged in Iran. While women were frequently seen without headscarves during recent periods of heightened tension with the United States, conservative clerics and politicians are now intensifying calls to enforce strict veiling regulations, characterizing the lack of hijab as ‘public nudity’.
Authorities have begun targeting businesses that do not enforce these rules. State media has reported the closure of cafes and restaurants in several cities, including Tehran and South Khorasan province. Specifically, HRANA reported that at least seven establishments in Tehran were closed on July 19 for non-compliance.
The regime is currently managing several simultaneous crises, including economic instability, conflict with the United States, and a reorganization of the security apparatus under the leadership of Mojtaba Khamenei. Despite the brutal suppression of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement following the death of Mahsa Amini four years ago, widespread defiance of clothing regulations remains prevalent, particularly among young women.
