Iran World Cup squad faces travel disruptions and political pressure

Iran’s national football team was forced to shift its World Cup camp from the United States to Mexico, meaning the squad must cross the US‑Mexico border before each match. On the way to Seattle for their group game against Egypt, star striker Mehdi Taremi and assistant coach Saeed Alhoei were detained by U.S. officials for about 25 minutes, prompting Iran’s federation to denounce the incident as a “dramatic” interference.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei said the team was ordered to leave Los Angeles immediately after their opening match and return to Tijuana, describing the travel restrictions as “unfair” and “oppressive.” Former Iran coach Afshin Gotbi, speaking from Japan, added that the constant border crossings create physical and mental strain and that political pressure from both U.S. authorities and Iranian officials adds further stress. The team is preparing for its next match against Egypt amid the logistical and diplomatic challenges.
