Iranian actor Pejman Dschamschidi sentenced to 99 lashes

Pejman Dschamschidi, a 48‑year‑old Iranian film star, was acquitted of rape allegations after a nationwide MeToo debate. The court convicted him of an unlawful relationship without sexual intercourse and ordered 99 lashes. The verdict may be appealed to Iran's Supreme Court.

He was briefly detained, released on bail, left the country and later returned to Iran. The case has ignited a broad discussion about gender, power and sexual violence in the Iranian film industry, reflecting the global MeToo movement that began with the Harvey Weinstein revelations. Under Iranian Islamic law, extramarital relationships are prohibited and can carry severe punishments.
