Pezeshkian to meet Putin in Moscow amid regional tensions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, October 27. The visit coincides with the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit. The two leaders are expected to discuss economic cooperation, energy security, and pressing geopolitical issues, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The meeting follows recent diplomatic activity, including a visit to Tehran by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The strategic partnership between Russia and Iran, which was expanded through a treaty in January 2025, covers sectors such as politics, economy, security, defense, energy, and transportation.

This diplomatic push occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional instability. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran’s core policies will remain unchanged regardless of whether a renewed conflict with the United States and Israel breaks out. Tensions remain high following the collapse of a June ceasefire memorandum, and the United States continues to maintain a naval blockade on Iranian ports, impacting oil exports and the domestic economy.
