Iranian footballers break silence after receiving Australian citizenship

Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh, members of the Iranian women’s football team who sought asylum in Australia, have broken their silence following their recent granting of Australian citizenship.

The athletes gained international attention after refusing to sing the Iranian national anthem during the Asian Cup on the Gold Coast, an act of solidarity following the Islamic Republic’s crackdown on protesters. Ramezanisadeh stated that her decision to remain silent was made with the awareness that it could be a matter of life and death, noting that it provided her with a clear conscience.

Pasandideh expressed that while she may never see her family in Iran again due to her defiance, she could not remain indifferent to the deaths of young people during the regime's crackdown. She noted that she had avoided contact with her father and brother in Iran for six months to avoid endangering their lives. Both women expressed hope for future political change in Iran that would allow them to return safely.
