China urges Iran and US to return to peace memorandum
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing to discuss regional de-escalation. Wang urged both Iran and the United States to exercise restraint and return to the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum to rebuild negotiation mechanisms. A primary focus of the talks was the urgent need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the stability of global energy supplies and international shipping lanes.
Araghchi expressed Iran's openness to diplomatic solutions that protect its sovereignty and legitimate interests, while emphasizing that Tehran expects the United States to fulfill its previous commitments. The meeting occurred amidst ongoing regional instability and ahead of a planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.
A Pentagon Inspector General report revealed the significant impact of the ongoing conflict, noting that Iranian strikes have damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings and facilities across US bases in several CENTCOM countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, and Jordan. The report estimated the cost of Operation Epic Fury at $33.4 billion through late June 2026.
