During the ongoing Iran war, satellite‑based navigation data are being deliberately jammed and spoofed, causing false ship positions on digital maps around the Strait of Hormuz – vessels appear on land, at airports or even a nuclear power plant.

Data from the analytics firm Windward record more than one million GPS‑interference events worldwide since the conflict began at the end of February. About 98 % of those incidents occurred in the Gulf region, and in the first two weeks of the war over 1 100 ships were affected.

Iran is reported to have perfected the technique, while Israel, the United States and other Gulf states are also said to employ GPS jamming and spoofing to protect military bases, airports and oil facilities. The disruptions raise safety risks for civilian shipping and aviation in an already volatile area.
