Iranian suspect arrested in Montenegro for alleged $3.4 billion US cyber‑attack

Montenegro police announced the detention of a 39‑year‑old Iranian‑Turkish man, identified only as A.B., in the coastal town of Kotor. He is wanted by a New York court on charges of conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking, and identity theft.

Authorities say the suspect carried out massive cyber‑attacks on more than 150 U.S. universities since 2013, inflicting estimated damages of about $3.4 billion. Stolen data were reportedly passed to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and other Iranian users. The arrest followed an FBI request and highlights "excellent cooperation" between Montenegrin police and U.S. law‑enforcement, part of a three‑year effort that has led to seven similar arrests in the country.
