Iranian women’s historic contributions to politics and music

On August 14, the anniversary of the 1906 decree that launched Iran’s Constitutional Revolution, scholars highlighted the pivotal yet often overlooked role of women. From secret schools and hidden societies to public protests and financial support for strikes, women of diverse classes participated actively in the struggle for justice, law and limited royal power.

A parallel cultural chronicle notes that Iranian women have also shaped the nation’s music heritage. Pioneers such as Qamar al‑Muluk Vaziri broke early 20th‑century norms by performing publicly without a veil, while later icons—including Googoosh, Hayedeh, Mahasti and contemporary artists—have continued to influence Iranian popular and classical music both at home and abroad.
