Iranian Writers' Association condemns use of death penalty

The Iranian Writers' Association has issued a statement condemning the use of the death penalty in Iran, describing it as a tool for “suppression and intimidation” used by the government to silence dissent and instill fear in society.

The association criticized the judicial processes leading to executions, noting that many sentences are based on “judge's knowledge” and confessions obtained under physical and psychological pressure. The statement highlighted several systemic violations of due process, including restricted access to legal counsel, prolonged detentions, and the lack of communication between detainees and their families.

According to the association, the scope of security-related arrests and executions has expanded following the protests in January 2024 (Dey 1404). They further noted that current wartime conditions are providing new justifications for the intensification of these practices. The group maintained an absolute opposition to the death penalty, stating that no crime or accusation justifies the deprivation of the right to life.
