Iran's Chief Justice threatens women violating hijab laws
Iran's Chief Justice, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, has threatened women who violate mandatory hijab laws with police, intelligence, and judicial actions. During a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council in Tehran, Mohseni-Ejei described the level of non-compliance in major cities as an “unbearable state of nakedness” and labeled such behavior as a “social anomaly.”
He urged authorities to prioritize enforcement and stated that social opposition should not deter officials from taking action. This escalation comes amid a period of increasing defiance by Iranian women regarding strict Islamic dress codes, a movement that gained significant momentum following the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022.
