Iran appoints Mehrdad Akhlaghi as new Minister of Defense

The Iranian Parliament has officially confirmed Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi as the new Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics. In a virtual voting session, Akhlaghi received 237 votes of confidence, with 15 members voting against and 25 abstaining out of 277 participants.

Akhlaghi, a 68-year-old veteran of the defense industry with over 42 years of experience, succeeds Majid Ebn-e Reza, who served in an interim capacity. The vacancy was created following the death of former Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh during US and Israeli military strikes in February.

As a specialist in ballistic missiles, aerospace technology, and military-industrial production, Akhlaghi previously headed the Defense Industries Organization and the Aerospace Industries Organization. His appointment comes during a period of regional tension and ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel.

In his inaugural remarks, Akhlaghi outlined priorities including rebuilding military-industrial infrastructure, accelerating defense technology development, and expanding cooperation with the private sector. He also issued a warning to the United States, stating that any further military aggression would result in significant regional damage and casualties.
