Iran petitions UN to condemn US ‘economic terrorism’ sanctions
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has formally petitioned the United Nations, including the Security Council and Secretary-General António Guterres, to condemn recent United States economic measures against Iran.
Araghchi characterized the US-announced ‘economic expulsion operation,’ launched on August 24, 2026, as ‘economic terrorism’ and ‘state terrorism.’ He argued that these secondary sanctions aim to force independent nations to abandon lawful trade with Tehran by threatening them with exclusion from the US financial system. The Iranian official asserted that these extraterritorial measures violate the UN Charter’s principles of sovereign equality and non-interference.
Furthermore, Araghchi claimed the sanctions constitute ‘collective punishment’ by intentionally restricting civilian access to essential goods, including food, medicine, energy, and medical supplies. He called on UN member states to reject and refuse the implementation of these unilateral coercive measures.
In response to the escalating pressure, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the United States intends to cut off all potential income sources for Iranian authorities, warning that any entity trading with Iran will ‘feel the full force of US power.’
