Iran's humanitarian drug shipments face unclear distribution amid shortage crisis

More than 18 countries and international organisations sent medicines and medical equipment to Iran as humanitarian aid during the 40‑day war. Weeks after the deliveries, Iranian officials say the whereabouts of many of the consignments remain uncertain, with no comprehensive public report on distribution, consumption or remaining stock. The Iranian Red Crescent and Ministry of Health note that most of the aid consists of emergency drugs, medical supplies, consumables, serum and bandages. Allegations have emerged that some medicines lack proper tracking codes and may have been smuggled across borders. The country is grappling with severe drug shortages, rising prices and a heavy debt owed to pharmaceutical firms. Finance Minister Ali Madani‑zadeh stated that an audit is needed to determine the exact debt and that any future payments would have to be included in the 2026 budget, as the current budget provides no allocation for these liabilities.
