Iran buries Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Mashhad as US‑Iran strikes intensify

Former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, killed on 28 February 2026 by a joint US‑Israeli airstrike, was buried on 9 July 2026 in the Imam Reza shrine in his hometown of Mashhad. Tens of millions attended the week‑long funeral procession that moved through Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala and other holy cities in Iraq before reaching Mashhad. The cortege was accompanied by massive crowds waving Iranian flags and anti‑US slogans; anti‑Trump banners were also displayed.

The burial took place as the United States and Iran exchanged further attacks. US forces said they struck about 90 Iranian military targets, including sites near the Bushehr nuclear plant and infrastructure along the Persian Gulf, killing 14 people and injuring 78. Iran responded with strikes on US bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan, and warned of “war crimes”. The hostilities disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, cutting traffic to single‑digit ships per day and prompting concerns over global oil supplies.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased, remained absent from the ceremonies, reportedly injured in the February strike. Iranian officials framed the funeral as a demonstration of national unity and a message of vengeance, while US President Donald Trump declared the cease‑fire over and warned of further escalation.
