Mohammad Eslami, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, is expected to miss the annual International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference in Vienna due to an international travel ban. Austria, the host nation, sought a waiver from the United Nations sanctions committee to allow Eslami to attend, but the request was denied.

This exclusion follows a period of heightened tension. Since June 2025, when Israel and the United States conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Iran has reportedly denied IAEA inspectors access to the affected facilities. Furthermore, the IAEA has been unable to verify the status of uranium stockpiles since those strikes.

The agency reports that Iran currently maintains 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, which is technically close to the 90 percent purity required for weapons-grade material. Relations remain strained following the reinstatement of UN sanctions via the snapback mechanism triggered by France, Britain, and Germany.
