Iraq and Kuwait reopen air routes following regional tensions
The Iraqi Ministry of Transport announced the reopening of air routes between Iraq and Kuwait, effective October 15, 2026. The decision follows a recent suspension of these routes due to regional tensions and security developments.
The new operational arrangements were reached under the supervision of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and in cooperation with five Gulf nations: Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Air traffic will be managed through specific flight paths and levels to ensure operational coordination, safe separation between aircraft, and adherence to high safety and security standards within Iraqi airspace. The implementation will be gradual, with continuous monitoring and evaluation to address any technical or operational observations.
