Iraq enhances border security and expands international transit routes

Iraq is implementing temporary measures at several border crossings with Iran to restructure operations, enhance inspection mechanisms, and improve readiness. The Iraqi Border Ports Commission stated that these steps are organizational and aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of passengers and goods. While some crossings are undergoing review, movement continues 24 hours a day through the Zurbatiya and Al-Mundiriya ports.

In a related development, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi has directed authorities to allow the entry and exit of stranded travelers through the Shalamcheh and Al-Shayb border crossings. These measures follow previous temporary closures intended to investigate regulatory violations and breaches.

Simultaneously, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport announced the opening of seven new international transit routes over the past eight months. This expansion is part of a strategy to transform Iraq into a regional logistics hub connecting the Arabian Gulf with Turkey, Europe, and Central Asia. The ministry is working to activate the TIR international road transport system and simplify customs procedures to reduce truck transit times and increase competitiveness.
