Iraq enters phase of full sovereignty, President Al-Amidi declares
Iraqi President Nizar Al-Amidi has declared that Iraq is entering a phase of full sovereignty, emphasizing that national independence, territorial integrity, and the sanctity of state institutions are non-negotiable principles. In a statement marking “Sovereignty Day,” Al-Amidi stressed that true sovereignty requires a strong state capable of enforcing the law and maintaining an exclusive monopoly on the use of force.
A central pillar of his message was the necessity of restricting all weapons to the control of the state, ensuring that decisions regarding peace and war remain the exclusive right of constitutional institutions. This comes as the Iraqi government works to integrate armed formations into the official security apparatus and decouple certain factions from political parties.
These declarations coincide with a significant shift in the country's security landscape following the conclusion of the International Coalition's mission in Iraq. As foreign forces complete their gradual redeployment and hand over bases to Iraqi authorities, Al-Amidi expressed a vision for a new era of international relations based on balanced partnerships and non-interference in domestic affairs.
