Iraq Expands Oil Export Routes Amid Diversification Push

Facing loading difficulties at Basra ports, Iraq has accelerated a policy begun under former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani to diversify its oil export corridors. The cabinet approved the use of Syrian Mediterranean ports such as Banias and Tartus for the transfer and storage of Basra crude, while parallel projects revive northern routes through Turkey and expand land‑pipeline capacity across the border.

The Ministry of Oil also rejected claims that Baghdad paid Iran fees for an Iraqi tanker to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, stating that Iraq is exempt from such charges under international law. National Security Advisor Qasim Al‑Araji affirmed the exemption, and the state oil marketer SOMO reported daily exports exceeding 9 million barrels, with a growing share shipped via Turkish and Syrian pathways. Plans aim to raise export capacity to about 1.19 million barrels per day through these alternative routes.
