Iraq faces pressure from Iran and US over border and security issues
Iraq is navigating complex geopolitical pressures involving both Iran and the United States. The closure of the Shayb (Chadhabeh) border crossing with Iran has raised questions regarding Baghdad’s decision-making independence. While the closure impacts Iraqi commerce and supply chains, there is scrutiny over whether the move was driven by national interests or American pressure to isolate Tehran.
Simultaneously, Iran is increasing pressure on Baghdad to extradite or expel Iranian Kurdish opposition groups currently residing in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Although the Iranian ambassador to Baghdad claims an agreement has been reached regarding these individuals, official Iraqi communications have not confirmed any expulsions or extraditions. Instead, Iraqi security officials have noted bilateral coordination based on a 2023 agreement aimed at disarming these groups and moving them away from the border, rather than handing them over to Iranian authorities.
