Iraq faces sovereignty challenges amid regional tensions

Iraq is facing significant security, political, and economic risks as regional tensions escalate. The country's sovereignty is being tested by its geographic position and the activities of armed factions that operate independently of government decision-making. Recent incidents, such as drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabian oil pipelines launched from Iraqi territory, have raised urgent questions regarding the government's ability to control its borders and prevent its land from being used in regional proxy conflicts.

Adding to these challenges, former lawmaker Raed al-Maliki has raised concerns regarding the implementation of unilateral sanctions imposed by foreign nations on Iraq's neighbors. Al-Maliki argues that complying with such sanctions, rather than UN Security Council mandates, may compromise Iraq's national independence and its constitutional principle of maintaining good relations with neighboring states. The situation highlights the delicate balance Baghdad must maintain between its relations with the United States, Iran, and neighboring Gulf states while attempting to consolidate state control over all military and political decision-making.
