Iraq investigates pipeline attack and links to Al-Quds Force

The Iraqi government is conducting a high-level investigation into an attack on the ‘East-West’ oil pipeline that caused significant damage and halted oil transfers. An investigative committee from the Prime Minister’s office is currently operating in Maysan province to uncover the circumstances of the strike, which reportedly involved long-range drones.

Security sources indicate that the investigation is examining dangerous information suggesting the involvement of specialized cells linked to the Iranian Al-Quds Force. These cells are described as operating independently from factional leadership. Preliminary findings are expected within 72 hours. In response to the crisis, Iraq has received intelligence assistance from the United States and has taken measures to restrict the movements of Houthi groups and trucks associated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) to manage tensions with Saudi Arabia.

This situation highlights a shift in Saudi Arabian policy toward Iraq. Riyadh is reportedly adopting a dual approach: targeting armed factions that pose a direct threat while attempting to maintain diplomatic and economic ties with the Iraqi government. This strategy aims to prevent Iraqi territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks, such as the July 28 strike that targeted PMF sites and resulted in at least 20 deaths. To avoid direct confrontation with the Iraqi state, Riyadh and Baghdad have agreed to keep intelligence-sharing channels open, particularly regarding drone activity.
