Iraq to draft law restricting all weapons to state control

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zeydi has directed the preparation of a new draft law aimed at restricting all weapons to the control of the state. The move is intended to address the threat posed by uncontrolled weaponry, which officials state undermines the rule of law and the authority of security institutions.

Government spokesperson Haydar al-Abbudi stated that Iraq intends to establish a state monopoly on force, with a target timeline for progress set for the end of September. To support this initiative, the Ministry of Interior has reportedly created a data bank to record 6 million weapons and has closed 71 unauthorized centers allegedly linked to the Hashd al-Shaabi forces.

Regarding foreign policy, al-Abbudi emphasized that Iraq will not align with any specific international axis or alliance, though it remains open to political and economic cooperation. Additionally, the Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit a memorandum to the United Nations regarding recent strikes on Hashd al-Shaabi headquarters.
