Iraq proposes 6+2 security framework for Gulf and Iran

Iraqi officials have been promoting a new regional security vision known as the ‘6+2’ framework, though the proposal has yet to receive a response from neighboring countries. The initiative involves the six Gulf Cooperation Council states, Iraq, and Iran.

Unveiled by Iraqi government security adviser Qasim Al-Araji, the plan seeks to address the ‘crisis of confidence’ between the Gulf states and Iran by emphasizing respect for state sovereignty. The vision aims to ensure that no country’s territory is used to threaten its neighbors and advocates for a balanced foreign policy to contain regional crises.

While the proposal was discussed within Iraq’s ruling Coordination Framework coalition, the Iraqi government has not officially adopted the initiative or released a formal document outlining its specific provisions. Analysts suggest the lack of engagement may stem from the proposal’s focus on territorial non-aggression, which aligns with existing Iranian narratives regarding the use of foreign military bases in the region.
