Iraq proposes unified security council for Iran and Saudi Arabia
Iraq has proposed the establishment of a unified security coordination council between Iran and Saudi Arabia to address what officials describe as a “crisis of trust” between the two regional powers. Qasim al-Araji, the national security advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, confirmed the proposal was submitted to both Tehran and Riyadh, though no immediate responses have been received.
The diplomatic initiative follows heightened regional tensions, including a July 27 incident where the Saudi Ministry of Defense reported intercepting and destroying drones launched from Iraqi territory. Saudi authorities claimed the drones targeted oil facilities in Riyadh and the Eastern Province and blamed Iran-affiliated militias for the strikes.
In response to the drone incidents, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered security agencies to investigate the claims. Amidst these tensions, Iraqi officials have reiterated their strategic commitment to bringing all weapons under state control. Government spokespeople have indicated that the deadline for this process is the end of September, coinciding with the withdrawal of the International Coalition from Iraq.
