Iraq reaches security and diplomatic agreements with Turkey and Kuwait

Iraq and Turkey have reached an agreement to gradually transfer control of the Baashiqa military base to the Iraqi government. Following meetings between Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the two nations established a mechanism and timeline for the handover to enhance security cooperation.

The agreement also focuses on Sinjar, where both sides committed to extending full Iraqi state authority and ending the presence of prohibited foreign armed elements. As part of this process, Yazidi armed groups in Sinjar have reportedly agreed to surrender heavy weapons in exchange for integration into official security institutions.

In a separate diplomatic development, Iraq and Kuwait have agreed to form a joint working group to address outstanding bilateral files. This team is tasked with reviewing pending issues and presenting recommendations to the leadership of both countries within 30 days. The group will hold rotating meetings in Baghdad and Kuwait City to foster a new phase of partnership and cooperation.
