Iraq-Saudi relations face scrutiny following Prime Minister al-Zaidi's visit

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia has drawn conflicting reactions regarding its diplomatic and economic implications.

Members of the Anbar Alliance have criticized the trip, describing it as “insulting and disappointing.” Raed Abdullah al-Dulaimi, a member of the alliance, claimed the visit, originally intended to last 48 hours, was reduced to just 45 minutes. He alleged that the Saudi government acted against international norms by requesting al-Zaidi meet alone while the rest of his delegation waited. Al-Dulaimi further noted that the visit yielded no tangible results or agreements, specifically failing to address Iraqi claims regarding an oil pipeline extending to the Yanbu port.

Conversely, political analysts suggest the visit could serve as a gateway for enhanced economic partnership and regional stability. Discussions have centered on the potential for mutual investment, particularly in the energy and oil sectors. Proponents of the engagement view Saudi Arabia as a pivotal partner for Iraq to bolster its economy and expand its strategic influence within the Arab and Islamic world.
