Iraq security forces conduct mass arrests in Baghdad Green Zone

In the early hours of 28 June, Iraqi security forces conducted large-scale raids within Baghdad’s Green Zone. Using Abrams tanks and counter-terrorism units, authorities sealed off the district to prevent individuals from leaving the area.

Nearly 50 people were detained during the operation, including approximately a dozen members of parliament and several senior officials. Alongside the arrests, security forces seized hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and gold, as well as significant quantities of jewelry.

The operation has drawn widespread public attention due to the long-standing issues of corruption among the political parties that have held power in Iraq since 2003.
