Iraq security forces take control of Sinjar from YBŞ
Iraqi security forces have begun taking control of military positions and security responsibilities in the Sinjar region from the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBŞ), an affiliate of the PKK. Under an agreement between the YBŞ and the Iraqi government, approximately 2,000 armed members are expected to officially join the Iraqi security forces.
The integration process includes the transfer of personnel, weapons, and strategic military points to federal authorities. This move aligns with the Iraqi Constitution, which prohibits the formation of military groups outside of the official armed forces. Following the takeover of Sinjar Mountain, the transfer of control for areas such as Baasha-Zilkan is expected to follow.
High-level officials from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office, the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, and the General Staff are participating in the transition. This development is viewed as a significant step toward centralizing state control over armed groups in the region.
