Iraq sentences French ISIS members to life imprisonment

The Karkh Criminal Court in Baghdad has sentenced three French nationals to life imprisonment for their affiliation with the Islamic State (ISIS). The defendants, identified as Kamal Habib Ahmed bin Mubarak, 42, Charly Sun Raymond, 32, and Amir Dali-Ammar, 37, were convicted of belonging to the militant group and participating in spreading terror.

These rulings follow a separate decision on Tuesday, in which the court sentenced six other French nationals to life imprisonment and a seventh to 15 years. The individuals are part of a group of 47 French nationals who were transferred from detention facilities in northeastern Syria to Iraq last year.

Under Article 87 of Iraq’s Penal Code, a life sentence is defined as a 20-year term. During the proceedings, defense lawyers and representatives from the French embassy were present. Some French lawyers have previously raised concerns regarding the treatment of detainees and have requested that the suspects be transferred to France for trial.
