Iraq targets zero gas flaring by 2027 amid energy sovereignty debates
Iraq's Ministry of Oil has announced plans to achieve zero gas flaring by the end of 2027. According to Deputy Minister for Gas Affairs Izzat Saber, the ministry is working to fully invest in associated gas across all oil fields and wells to support the national economy and electricity generation.
By the end of this year, the ministry expects to invest approximately 80 million standard cubic feet from the Kirkuk fields. Ongoing maintenance is also being conducted at the North Gas Company to support these energy goals.
In a separate political development, members of the Coordination Framework have raised concerns regarding foreign influence in Iraq's energy sector. Representative Mueen al-Kazimi warned against what he described as American attempts to dominate vital economic sectors, specifically oil and energy. He called for diversifying investment partnerships with various international companies to ensure economic sovereignty and reduce dependency on Western influence.
