Iraqi Court Sentences Drug Boss Kazem Hamad to Life Imprisonment
The Iraqi judiciary sentenced Kazem “Kaz” Hamad to life imprisonment for drug trafficking, a decision confirmed by the Iraqi National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation (NCIJC).
Hamad, described as one of the most wanted individuals by Iraqi and international courts, has been linked to transnational organised‑crime gangs involved in large‑scale narcotics importation into Iraq and Australia, including heroin, as well as money laundering, murder, kidnapping, extortion and organised violence. He was arrested in January 2026 by Iraqi authorities following a request from Australian law‑enforcement agencies and after being deported from Australia to Iraq in 2023.
Australian agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, acknowledged cooperation with Iraq on the case. Following Hamad’s incarceration, a new leader has emerged to head his criminal syndicate.
