Iraqi Migrant Smuggling Suspect Arrested at Istanbul Airport
Iraqi national S. M. M., 55, who was subject to an international search warrant for migrant‑smuggling operations across the Aegean Sea, was intercepted at Istanbul Airport on 13 June 2026. He attempted to enter Turkey using a forged passport. Turkish police, acting on intelligence from Italy and Greece, detained the suspect, who was subsequently taken to judicial authorities.
The suspect faces charges in Turkey for "organised crime with the aim of committing offences" and "migrant smuggling," in addition to the existing warrants from Italy and Greece. After processing, he was remanded to custody pending trial.
Authorities highlighted the cooperation between Turkish, Italian and Greek law‑enforcement agencies in disrupting a network that facilitated the illegal movement of migrants to Europe via the Aegean route.
