Iran rejects US ceasefire proposal, cites Hormuz control as sticking point

Iran has turned down a United States‑backed cease‑fire proposal that was delivered to Tehran by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi. Officials said the offer failed to address control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran regards as a non‑negotiable condition. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the obstacle is “America’s illogical, greedy and controlling outlook,” not a lack of diplomatic channels.

During al‑Zaidi’s visit to Tehran, he also met President Masoud Pezeshkian and signed a series of memoranda of understanding covering foreign affairs, finance, energy and transportation, reinforcing the long‑standing Iraq‑Iran partnership. Iraq pledged not to allow its territory to be used against Iran.

Iran warned that if the United States proceeds with its threats of a “massive attack,” it could widen the conflict, targeting Tel Aviv and urging Houthi forces to close the Bab al‑Mandab strait. Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command reported a 13th consecutive night of strikes on Iranian positions, and global oil prices rose above $100 per barrel as markets priced the risk of further disruption to the Hormuz and Red Sea shipping lanes.
